NEW OUTREACH MINISTRY BEGINS
Several Cursillistas from the Lutheran and
Presbyterian movements are organizing a new
ministry with Developmentally Disabled adults, to
be called 'HESED' (2 syllables & rhymes with
blessed), the Hebrew word for Lovingkindness.
Hesed #1 was a single
overnight event, held September 26 & 27, 1997
at Camp New Hope
outside of Durham. 20 guests attended: 10 who are
disabled in developmental ways,
and 10 who are disabled in
other ways (aren't we all?).
Hesed #2 was held in Fall 1998 and Hesed #3 and #4 were held
in October of 1999 & 2000 Camp Royall.
Hesed #5 is planned for October 2001.
The Hesed experience is being designed to
respond to the spiritual needs of Developmentally
Disabled folks, as well as to take advantage of their
gifts. It will be Christ-centered, grace-filled, and
Spirit-led. It will be highly experiential with
drama, music, and games. Hesed is intended to
be the core of an intentional community of
support and ministry for and with
Developmentally Disabled people.
Does the Spirit call you to a ministry like this?
Are there Developmentally Disabled persons you
know who are active Christians who could benefit
from such an event? Would you like to know
more? Would you like to be part of our Team, or
would you like to come as a guest? If you answer
Yes, or even Maybe to one or more of these
questions, call Diane Bowker in Raleigh at
919-848-8927, Connie Poovey in Burlington at
910-227-7596.
